Providing quality of service guarantees using only edge routers

چکیده
Providing strict bandwidth guarantees to packet flows in the Internet is an inherently challenging task. It requires signaling mechanisms, policing mechanisms, accurate and rapid accounting of network resources, and call admission control. We present a novel protocol that provides bandwidthguarantees to Internet packet flows. This protocol, called the Edge-assisted Quality of Service (EQOS) protocol, requires modifications to only a subset of an administrative domain’s routers, namely the edge routers on the domain’s periphery. Legacy routers within the core of the domain require no modifications. We present the results of several simulation experiments showing that EQOS is able to provide bandwidth guarantees to competing flows.

Edge-to-Edge Quality-of-Service Domain
Researchers have proposed numerous approaches to providing Quality-of-Service (QoS) across the Internet. The IETF has proposed two reservation approaches: hop-by-hop bandwidth reservation (IntServ); and per-hop behaviour bandwidth reservation (DiffServ). An edge router generates traffic, accepts per-flow reservation and classifies them into predetermined service class; while a core router ensur...
متن کاملInternet network design for quality of service guarantee using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)
By developing the new services such as VoIP and Videoconference, using a mechanism is needed to support the quality of service of the application programs. Different models have been presented to guarantee the quality of service. Among these, the differentiated services can be mentioned which was presented by IETF. In the architecture of the differentiated services, no admission control mechani...

Among recent trends in Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in the Internet is the Differentiated Services Architecture, termed DiffServ. The successful deployment of Diffserv to provide a premium QoS guarantees to network traffic requires an effective admission control mechanism, which needs to be scalable and relatively simple to implement. In this paper we present a QoS network framework wi...

Introduction There are two major frameworks for providing service guarantees in IP-based networks: The Integrated Services (IS) architecture and the Differentiated Services (DS) architecture. While the IS framework provides service guarantees using a flow-based packet differentiation, the DS architecture differentiates the treatment of aggregates. Though IS is able to provide strong Quality of ...
متن کاملThe Cost of QoS Support in Edge Devices. An Experimental Study
This paper investigates the problem of making QoS guarantees available in access devices such as edge routers, that are commonly deployed in today’s IP networks. In the paper, we propose a specific design which we evaluate by carrying out a complete implementation, whose performance we then measure in the context of an experimental testbed. Our results indicate that a reasonable level of servic...
